Issue
User wants to understand how, why, and when, to use the ProfStore.XML
Solution
The ProfStore.xml is installed under C:\Program Files (x86)\Foxit Software\Foxit PDF Editor\ProfStore, if needed. The ProfStore.xml file is created, when needed, by settings used in the Foxit Customization Wizard which creates an MST input file. It is housed in the fct.cab, if needed, and copied during deployment. Generally speaking, the customer does not need to worry about configuring or setting anything in the ProfStore.xml.
What are some legitimate reasons to modify or create a ProfStore.xml?
The ProfStore.xml is the last item read by Foxit PDF Editor. That means that it will overwrite or lock a setting made in the Windows Registry or Microsoft Active Directory GPO.
Troubleshooting tip: if a Foxit PDF Editor setting won't change regardless of modifying the correct registry key or GPO, rename the ProfStore.xml to take it out of the mix. Many times this will solve this frustrating issue.
Once an MST has been created and used to deploy an installation, the global settings cannot be changed unless the package is uninstalled and reinstalled with the newer settings. Many times the IT Administrator does not want to put the users through this process.
- Modify a setting. If a setting needs to be changed without a total reinstallation, the IT Administrator can take the ProfStore.xml that everyone is using and modify it using the Foxit customized XML Editor. The modified ProfStore.xml can then be pushed out to the users without their knowledge and the new setting(s) become(s) active.
- Lock a setting. If there is a setting that the IT Administrator does not want to be changed by the end-user but did not make that configuration while creating the MST, it can be done retroactively in the ProfStore.xml without total redeployment.
The ProfStore.xml is not something that should be edited or created lightly.
