When you double click on an embedded PDF object in Microsoft office document,you may fail to open the embedded file, but receive a pop-up message says “The server application, source file or item cannot be found. Make sure the application is property installed, and then it has not been deleted, moved, renamed, or blocked by policy.”
Reason
The embedded PDF object in Microsoft office is bundled by COM,the office application itself will remember the default source program for opening embedded PDF when user embed the PDF into word file. If the pdf file embedded as Foxit PhantomPDF Document ,the embedded object will ask Foxit PhantomPDF application to open it.If the PDF file embedded as Adobe Acrobat Document, the embedded object will ask for Adobe acrobat to open it. You should receive the above message when you try to open an embedded PDF object that is not a Foxit PhantomPDF Document in Microsoft office document.
Solutions
From Foxit PhantomPDF version 6.1 and above, Foxit has done some technical improvements to make our Foxit PhantomPDF to be able to open Embedded Adobe Acrobat Documents and Embedded Foxit Reader Documents in Microsoft office. You have some ways to set Foxit PhantomPDF to have the capability of opening Embedded Adobe Acrobat Documents and Embedded Foxit Reader Documents.
For end users with Foxit PhantomPDF version 6.1 and above installed, please set in Preferences window by doing the following procedures:
Open Foxit PhantomPDF, go to File > Preferences > File associations, click on Advanced… button to open Advanced… window, check option Use Foxit PhantomPDF to open embedded Acrobat files and embedded Foxit Reader PDF files in Microsoft Office Acrobat and Foxit Reader is not installed, click OK in Advanced… window to exit it and then click on Make default PDF viewer button under File associations panel in Preferences, choose Yes if there is any UAC message pops up. Finally, click on OK button to apply the changes.
For .msi installer package of Foxit PhantomPDF, please add an additional parameter EMBEDDED_PDF_INOFFICE=1 when installing from command line by following the steps below:
1.Press Windows logo key+ R on the keyboard to open the Run box.
2.Type “CMD” (without quotes) into Run box and Press Ctrl+Shift+Enter to launch Command Prompt as administrator.
3. In the command prompt, input
msiexec /i “path\setup.msi” EMBEDDED_PDF_INOFFICE=1
4. Press Enter to start the install process.
Usage Example
I want to install Foxit PhantomPDF with the capability of opening embedded Acrobat file in Microsoft office and have a setup file called “FoxitPhantomPDF92_enu_Setup.msi” stored on my E:\drive.
The command line is
misexec /i “E:\FoxitPhantomPDF92_enu_Setup.msi” EMBEDDED_PDF_INOFFICE=1
More installation command-line parameters for Foxit PhantomPDF, please refer to Quick Installation Guide/ Command-line Installation section in Foxit PhantomPDF user manual .
For .exe installer package of Foxit PhantomPDF, please add “/displayadobeindoc”(without quotes) at the end of the command line when installing from command line.
Usage Example
I want to install Foxit PhantomPDF with the capability of opening embedded Acrobat file in Microsoft office and have a setup file called FoxitPhantomPDF92_L10N_Setup.exe" stored on my E:\ drive.
The command line is
“E:\FoxitPhantomPDF92_L10N_Setup.exe” /displayadobeindoc
1.Follow here (https://help.foxitsoftware.com/kb/available-customization-tools.php) to download the appropriate Foxit Customization Tool.
2.Luanch Foxit Customization Wizard tool to check option Use Foxit PhantomPDF to open embedded Acrobat files and embedded Foxit Reader files in Microsoft Office under General tab to generate a transform mst file.For detailed instructions about how to use Foxit Customization tool to generate MST file, please refer to this article.
3.Apply the MST file during deployment of Foxit PhantomPDF. For how to apply the Transform MST file, please refer to this article.
Note:We still cannot set Foxit PhantomPDF to have the capability of opening Embedded Adobe Acrobat Documents and Embedded Foxit Reader Documents by configuring in Foxit PhantomPDF's GPO template or changing Foxit PhantomPDF's registry keys.
